EU and US issue safety warnings on hazardous children's toys

The Croatian State Inspectorate and the EU rapid alert system (RAPEX) have warned that a baby toy sold on the Shein platform, model K5803, poses a serious choking risk. The toy, imported from China, contains protruding silicone parts that can block a child's airway and does not meet EU toy‑safety standards (EN 71‑1). The alert has prompted the European Union to adopt stricter toy‑safety rules, tightening bans on harmful chemicals and increasing obligations for manufacturers, importers and online marketplaces.

Doctors in the United Kingdom and the United States have also warned about the dangers of water beads – small gel or jelly spheres that expand when ingested. The beads can cause intestinal blockage that is hard to detect on X‑rays. More than 20,000 cases of ingestion in children under six have been recorded in the US between 2019 and 2024. In response, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has tightened regulations on the sale of non‑compliant beads, and the British Office for Product Safety and Standards issued similar guidance.

Both warnings highlight growing concerns over unsafe children’s products sold online and the need for tighter regulatory oversight to protect vulnerable users.
