EU announces Middle Corridor project and connectivity summit in Bulgaria

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a new international connectivity project known as the ‘Middle Corridor’. This initiative aims to directly link the South Caucasus and Central Asia with the European market. Through the Global Gateway initiative, the European Union seeks to attract up to 12 billion euros in public and private investments to diversify trade routes and triple trade flows by 2030.

As part of this development, a Regional Connectivity Summit will be organized in coordination with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos described Bulgaria as ‘Europe’s connectivity gateway’ due to its strategic position within the Middle Corridor. Kos noted that the development of this route presents a significant opportunity, particularly as northern trade routes face limitations due to the war in Ukraine.
