Romania receives €2.25 billion EU grant under PNRR

The European Commission has transferred €2.251 billion to Romania as the fourth payment of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The grant, confirmed by interim Investment Minister Dragoș Pîslaru – “2 251 481 951 Euro have entered today officially in Romania’s account” – is a non‑refundable component of the EU’s post‑pandemic recovery fund. The payment follows the approval of 38 milestones and 24 targets covering reforms and investments in health care, pensions, digital administration, forest management, decarbonisation of transport and energy, and infrastructure. With this tranche, total funds received from the PNRR rise to about €13 billion, surpassing 60 % of the country’s allocation. The money will be converted into lei to support state‑budget liquidity for imminent payments of roughly €12 billion due in June and to continue financing major projects such as highway upgrades, hospital modernisation, and pension system sustainability.
