EU approves new driving license rules for Class B holders

The European Parliament has approved new driving license regulations aimed at easing restrictions for Class B license holders. Under the new rules, individuals may be permitted to drive vehicles with a total weight of up to 4.25 tons following specific training or an examination. EU member states have three years to transpose these requirements into national law, with an additional year provided for practical implementation.

Currently, Class B license holders can tow light, unbraked trailers up to 750 kg without restriction. For heavier trailers, the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer must not exceed 3.5 tons, and the loaded trailer weight cannot exceed the vehicle's registered unladen weight.

Regarding equipment, drivers using detachable tow bars should note that while there is no general legal requirement in Germany to remove them when not in use, specific vehicle operating permits or ECE type approvals may mandate removal. Additionally, tow bars must not obstruct the visibility of the vehicle's license plate.
