European Union automotive policies risk raising electric vehicle prices
The European Union is implementing a series of industrial policies, including the Industrial Accelerator Act, aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign competitors like China. These measures include local-content requirements for electric vehicles, batteries, and steel, as well as potential tariffs on Chinese imports.
However, the think tank Bruegel warns that these protectionist measures may act as an implicit pact that shields manufacturers while placing a heavy financial burden on consumers and taxpayers. Specifically, requiring battery cell production within the EU could raise costs from €50 to €85 per kilowatt-hour, potentially adding over €2,100 to the price of a standard electric vehicle. Additional requirements for low-carbon steel could add another €200 per vehicle.
Industry leaders have expressed varying views on the approach. BMW board member Milan Nedeljkovic has advocated for voluntary pricing agreements with China rather than increased tariffs to avoid escalating trade tensions. Meanwhile, the EU's automotive sector faces significant challenges, including a decline in domestic production and the need to balance the cost-efficiency of global supply chains against the resilience of localized ones.
