Trans-Caspian fiber optic cable to connect Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan

A trans-Caspian fiber optic cable project is progressing to connect Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, serving as a key component of the Digital Silk Way initiative to link Europe and Asia.

Rashad Hasanov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, stated that the approximately 380-kilometer undersea cable connecting Sumgayit and Aktau is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The cable reached the Kazakh coast in August.

Ana Nakashidze, CEO of AzerTelecom, noted that the current line has a capacity exceeding 400 Tbit/s, which could be increased to 600 Tbit/s using advanced DWDM technology. To enhance regional resilience and infrastructure diversification, AzerTelecom is also considering the installation of a second undersea fiber optic cable in the Caspian Sea.
