EU member states have entered a decisive phase of negotiations regarding the Multiannual Financial Framework for the 2028-2034 period. The European Commission has proposed a budget package of nearly 2,000 billion euros, which includes 300 billion euros for agriculture and 450 billion euros for cohesion.
Significant divisions persist between member states. A group of six nations, led by Germany and including Austria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden, is calling for reductions of several hundred billion euros. Meanwhile, European Parliament budget rapporteur Siegfried Mureșan has warned that proposed cuts could weaken Europe by failing to address essential security and competitiveness challenges. The Irish presidency aims to facilitate a compromise, with the goal of reaching a budget agreement by the end of 2026 for implementation in January 2028.
