EU budget negotiations under Irish presidency face proposed cuts

Proposed cuts to the European Union budget during Ireland’s presidency negotiations for the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) are raising concerns regarding national and democratic funding.

In Ireland, potential reductions in EU spending could impact regional development, agriculture, research, infrastructure, and social programmes. While immediate cuts to household payments are not expected, the reductions may limit future public investment and projects aimed at addressing regional inequality.

On a broader scale, the negotiations include an eight per cent reduction to the overall budget. This includes a 30 per cent cut to AgoraEU, a programme dedicated to supporting democracy, civil society, media, and culture. Critics note that such reductions to democratic resilience programmes could impact security, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.
