EU budget reforms face scrutiny over fraud risks and fund tracking

The European Court of Auditors has warned that proposed reforms to the European Union budget could increase the risk of fund misappropriation. European Commission plans to introduce greater flexibility to allow for rapid responses to crises such as pandemics, wars, and climate change. However, Tony Murphy, President of the European Court of Auditors, cautioned that consolidating nearly one trillion euros into a single fund may make tracking public spending more difficult, essentially relying on member states to self-regulate.

In a related context of fund misuse, an investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has moved to trial regarding the alleged fraudulent use of agricultural funds in Romania. The case involves Beáta Szabó and Green Ferma SRL, concerning the misuse of approximately 1.67 million lei in EU and national funds intended for agricultural machinery. Prosecutors allege that equipment purchased through a 2017 grant was illegally transferred to another company in 2021, violating strict monitoring requirements designed to ensure assets remain within the beneficiary's agricultural enterprise.
