EU officials warn of unsustainable trade imbalance with China
The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China has expressed serious concern regarding the widening trade imbalance between China and the EU. According to the Chamber, the current trajectory is unsustainable due to the disparity between China’s high export dynamism and its stagnant domestic consumption. China’s trade surplus with the EU reached 242 billion dollars by the end of August.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has characterized the trade deficit as reaching a “tipping point,” warning that the imbalance could lead to deindustrialization within Europe. The imbalance is largely attributed to China’s rapid expansion of manufacturing capacity and state subsidies, which allow for highly competitive exports in sectors such as electrical equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
In response to these structural imbalances and perceived unfair competition, the European Commission has threatened higher tariffs on Chinese exports if negotiations do not yield significant changes. China has responded by stating it will react proportionally to any European protectionist measures, maintaining that its products are competitive due to technological innovation.
