EU Trade Envoy visits Beijing to negotiate China trade deficit

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič has arrived in Beijing for two days of high-level negotiations with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. The mission aims to address a record trade deficit that has reached approximately 1 billion euros per day, a situation described by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a “point of no return.”

Brussels is seeking tangible commitments from Beijing to rebalance trade relations, specifically targeting Chinese industrial overcapacity and state subsidies. Key areas of concern include the influx of low-cost Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles, which threaten European industrial sectors. The EU is considering protective measures, such as import caps on hybrid vehicles, to mitigate this impact.

Germany and France have signaled a shift in policy, urging the EU to adopt more assertive tools to defend its single market. This includes a proposed mechanism that could allow the bloc to rapidly restrict access for companies from nations engaged in trade wars. These diplomatic efforts come as European industries face significant pressure, exemplified by Volkswagen’s announcement regarding potential large-scale layoffs.
