EU cohesion policy focus at EUconomy closing event in Berlin
The EUconomy – Partnerships4Prosperity media initiative concluded with a closing event in Berlin, focusing on the visibility and impact of EU cohesion policy. The event brought together journalists, policymakers, and regional cooperation experts to discuss how the tangible benefits of cohesion—such as cross-border education, employment, and public services—can be better communicated to regional audiences.
Claudius Schmidt-Faber, a Senior Economic Expert at the European Commission, emphasized that cohesion policy is a fundamental promise of the EU to ensure integration benefits all regions and citizens. He noted that European resilience depends on preventing regions from being left behind and removing barriers at borders. Looking toward the next Multiannual Financial Framework starting in 2028, Schmidt-Faber addressed the future architecture of these regional development policies.
Panelists also discussed the difficulty of making cohesion policy visible, noting that successful cooperation in sectors like healthcare and transport often remains unnoticed because it functions smoothly without creating obstacles. The discussion highlighted the role of Interreg projects in building trust and cooperation across European borders.
