The European Commission, led by President Ursula von der Leyen, is set to introduce EU‑wide age restrictions for social‑media use. An expert panel recommended a tiered approach: children under three should have no screen time; those under 13 may use platforms only for limited periods under parental, caregiver or teacher supervision; teenagers aged 13‑18 could access social media with built‑in safety features, with restrictions easing as they grow older.

Von der Leyen said the proposal will be turned into a legislative draft after the summer, with a formal presentation expected in September. The plan aims to replace a patchwork of national rules and to enforce the measures through the Digital Services Act, including a new open‑source age‑verification app.

Research cited by the panel shows European youths spend four to six hours daily on social media, and nearly 60 % report emotional or psychological difficulties linked to that use. The EU’s move follows similar bans or age‑limit laws in countries such as Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and several European states.
