EU ministers reject proposal to restrict Baltic herring fishing

EU ministers have rejected a European Commission proposal to further restrict herring and cod fishing in the Baltic Sea. The decision ensures that small-scale coastal fisheries can continue to use passive gear, such as gillnets, on boats under twelve meters.

German Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Alois Rainer advocated for maintaining these exceptions to protect the economic viability of German coastal fishing. While the Commission sought to nearly halve the allowed catch for western herring, the final agreement maintains existing catch limits for herring and cod as bycatch.

In contrast to the restrictions on herring, the agreement allows for increased fishing quotas for other species, including sprat and certain eastern herring stocks, based on scientific assessments of their current status.
