EU Commissioner discusses Palestinian elections and Gaza recovery

European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica has expressed support for the Palestinian Authority’s decision to hold legislative elections on November 28. The elections, which will cover the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, are intended to elect representatives for the next Palestinian Legislative Council. Suica emphasized the necessity of a “just, credible and inclusive” electoral process to strengthen Palestinian institutions. Notably, Hamas has announced its intention to participate in the elections within a broad national coalition, marking the first such vote in two decades.

In separate discussions, Commissioner Suica met with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar to address EU-Israel relations, regional stability, and Gaza recovery efforts. Suica highlighted the urgent need to advance early recovery projects in Gaza, focusing on restoring essential social and economic services and rehabilitating critical infrastructure. The discussions also touched upon the importance of a reformed and functioning Palestinian Authority to ensure security and stability across the Middle East.
