EU Commissioner Serafin visits Bulgaria to discuss 2028–2034 budget

European Commissioner for Budget, Fighting Fraud and Public Administration, Piotr Serafin, is conducting a two-day visit to Bulgaria on October 29 and 30, 2026. The visit is part of a broader European tour to consult with member states regarding the European Union's next long-term budget for the 2028–2034 period, which the Commission has proposed at nearly 2 trillion euros.

During his visit, Serafin is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Finance Minister Galab Donev, and Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov. Discussions will focus on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), emphasizing the need to simplify funding procedures, reduce administrative burdens, and ensure transparency. Serafin will also open a conference in Sofia titled ‘The Next Multiannual Financial Framework: Priorities and Principles’.

Additional agenda items include meetings with the National Association of Municipalities to discuss regional partnership plans and sessions with Bulgarian technology companies to review EU-funded projects. Prime Minister Radev noted that the new EU own resources must be carefully assessed to avoid undue impact on national budgets, particularly for countries like Bulgaria that are currently managing excessive budget deficits.
