EU considers restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes

European Union member states are considering a range of measures to restrict Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing under their national flags in international sports. According to European diplomats, these potential actions include targeted sanctions, visa restrictions, and the reduction of financial support for organizations that facilitate such participation.

Discussions also involve the possibility of capping revenue from media rights, though officials noted significant implementation challenges. The move comes as EU leaders maintain that participation in international sporting and cultural events should not be normalized until peace is established in Ukraine.

This follows a decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to temporarily lift the suspension of the Russian and Belarusian Olympic Committees in July, which could impact the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. For the 2024 Paris Olympics, the IOC had already mandated that these athletes compete without national flags, anthems, or other national identifiers.
