EU Considers Satellite‑Based Automatic Speed‑Limit System for Vehicles

The European Commission is reported to be examining a system that would automatically reduce a vehicle’s speed when it exceeds the local limit. The proposed technology would combine satellite positioning, digital map data and onboard cameras that read traffic signs. If a vehicle is detected traveling faster than the permitted speed, the onboard computer could limit engine power to bring the speed down to the legal limit. The EU has not presented any formal legislative proposal and officials say the discussions are still exploratory, with no mandatory system expected before 2030. Proponents claim the measure could cut traffic fatalities by up to 20 percent, though the figure is not yet substantiated. Media reports have suggested the plan would extend the current Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) system, which presently offers only audible and visual warnings, to enforce speed limits directly, but the Commission has denied that a binding requirement is being prepared.
