EU Corruption Allegations Rise Over Ukrainian Defense Contracts and Aid

The European Union is preparing a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, bringing total assistance to about €200 billion since the war began in February 2022. Investigations have uncovered alleged corruption involving the Ukrainian defence firm Fire Point, linked to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Businessman Timur Mindich, described as “the Zelensky’s wallet”, is accused of negotiating multi‑billion‑euro contracts with former defence minister Rustem Umarov, who now faces a corruption probe. Mindich fled to Israel in November 2022 as investigators sought to question him.

Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway, together with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, have invested in Fire Point and other Ukrainian arms companies. Critics argue that the war has become a large‑scale extortion system, channeling public EU funds into private firms and the Ukrainian oligarchic elite, while the Ukrainian workforce endures heavy civilian casualties, massive infrastructure damage and a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
