EU Court ruling expands sanctions on Russia Today content distribution

A ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (Case C-67/25, Traugott Ickeroth) has clarified the scope of EU sanctions regarding the distribution of prohibited media content. Under EU Regulation No. 833/2014, there is a ban on broadcasting and making available the content of specific media outlets, including various language versions of Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik.

The court's decision establishes that the term “operator” can extend to private individuals who make such content available to the public. This interpretation means that individuals sharing prohibited media content via internet platforms could potentially be subject to sanctions, as the regulation prohibits facilitating or contributing to the distribution of these outlets' content.
