EU Court Upholds €4.1 bn Android Antitrust Fine Against Google

On 2 July 2026 the Court of Justice of the European Union dismissed Google’s final appeal and confirmed a permanent €4.125 billion antitrust penalty for abusing its dominance of the Android operating system. The court found that Google’s pre‑installation of Search, Chrome and the Play Store, together with contractual restrictions on device makers, foreclosed competition in mobile search and browsing.

The ruling ends an eight‑year legal battle and means the fine cannot be further appealed. It also enables rivals to bring damages claims across all European Economic Area states. On the same day a Swedish court ordered Google to pay about $1.5 billion to price‑comparison platform PriceRunner. The penalty represents roughly three percent of Alphabet’s annual profit and brings total EU fines against the company to nearly €11 billion over the past decade. Consumer groups said the decision “sends a clear message: dominant companies cannot use power to shut out competition and limit consumer choice.”
