EU court upholds Turów fines as Meta settles child safety lawsuit

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has upheld penalties against Poland regarding the Turów brown coal mine. Following the dismissal of Poland's appeal, the European Commission will retain approximately 68.5 million euros withheld from EU funds. Additionally, Poland previously paid 45 million euros to the Czech Republic as part of a 2022 settlement. The total cost of the dispute is estimated at 113.5 million euros. The legal conflict originated from Czech complaints that the mine's operations violated environmental directives and caused groundwater depletion across the border.

In a separate legal development, Meta has reached a multi-billion dollar settlement to resolve a lawsuit brought by a coalition of U.S. states. The litigation accused the company of designing Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to minors and mishandling children's personal data. While the potential statutory penalties were estimated as high as 1.4 trillion USD, financial markets reacted with relief to the settlement, viewing the final costs as manageable compared to the risk of a jury verdict.
