EU customs tighten souvenir bans and receipt rules for travelers

The Austrian automobile, motorcycle and touring club (ÖAMTC) warns that taking protected natural souvenirs such as shells, sand or stones from popular tourist destinations—including Greece, Croatia, Italy and France—is prohibited under national laws and the international CITES convention. Violations can result in hefty fines up to €150,000 and, in some cases, imprisonment of up to five years.

EU customs regulations do not impose a specific penalty for discarding a purchase receipt before crossing a border. However, without a receipt customs officials may determine the value of imported goods using other evidence, potentially leading to higher duty assessments. Intentional falsification of documentation or misleading customs authorities remains a punishable offense.
