EU debt and Swedish aid policy face political scrutiny

Debates regarding European Union fiscal policy and Swedish foreign aid have emerged as key points of political contention. In the European Parliament, concerns have been raised regarding the rapid increase in EU debt, which reportedly grew eightfold over a five-year period to reach 739 billion euros by early 2026.

During discussions on an ambitious multi-year budget, MEP Rasmus Andresen suggested that member states like Germany and Sweden could avoid higher fees by implementing new EU taxes. Critics, including MEP Dick Erixon, argue that such measures would ultimately place a heavier tax burden on citizens in member states to fund expanding EU expenditures.

In Sweden, there is ongoing debate regarding the reduction of international development aid. Discussions involve the potential impact on human rights, healthcare, and education globally, as well as the strategic use of aid as ‘soft power’ to enhance a nation's geopolitical influence.
