EU Deforestation Regulation requires origin proof for Brazilian exports
Brazilian producers, cooperatives, and exporters supplying the European market have less than three months to comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Starting December 30, large and medium operators must provide proof of origin for several commodities, including beef, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, wood, and certain derivatives.
To access the European market, products must meet two primary criteria: they must be free from deforestation occurring after December 31, 2020, and they must be produced in accordance with the applicable legislation of the country of origin. Notably, a Brazilian authorization for vegetation suppression does not automatically satisfy the EU requirement.
Compliance requires rigorous data organization, including the geolocalization of production areas. For livestock, documentation must trace back to the establishments where the cattle were raised. While Brazil’s Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) can be used as part of the evidence, it must be accompanied by verifiable data regarding production and conformity to prevent discrepancies in coordinates or supplier records.
