EU AI Act rolls out August 2026 with strict deadlines and hefty fines
The EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act will become applicable on 2 August 2026, introducing clear transition periods for companies. High‑risk AI systems must meet the new requirements by 2 December 2027, while transparency obligations start earlier. Violations can attract fines of up to €35 million or 7 % of worldwide annual turnover. Germany plans to use opening clauses of the GDPR and create a central supervisory authority to ease compliance for SMEs and non‑commercial activities.
In Germany, corporate directors will increasingly be held personally responsible for IT‑security shortcomings as the 2026 regulatory landscape makes cybersecurity a chief executive priority.
The newly published book “The Autonomous Economy” argues that robotics and AI are forming a new industrial asset class. It cites South Korean giants SK Group, Hyundai Motor Group and Hanwha committing about $195 billion to advanced industrial projects and notes that 542 000 industrial robots were installed worldwide in 2024. The author emphasizes that “the most important infrastructure of the future is the ability to let systems act autonomously.”
