European Commission demands Meta and TikTok action after Ceuta migrant crisis
The European Commission has called on social media platforms Meta and TikTok to take decisive action against disinformation following a massive migrant influx into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. EU Commissioner for Tech Sovereignty Henna Virkkunen held urgent discussions with the tech companies, demanding increased monitoring and stronger cooperation with fact-checkers to protect the integrity of the digital space during crises.
The surge, which saw approximately 72,000 migrants enter Ceuta from Morocco between July 30 and 31, was reportedly fueled by viral social media rumors falsely claiming the border was open and offering accommodation. The humanitarian situation turned tragic, with Spanish authorities reporting 80 deaths during the crossings, while some human rights organizations estimate the toll may be significantly higher.
An investigation by the technology company Golden Owl concluded with a high degree of confidence that the migrant movement was a deliberately organized operation. EU migration chief Magnus Brunner characterized the event as a test of the bloc's border security and its resilience to disinformation. Officials are currently investigating whether foreign state actors, such as Russia, were involved in amplifying the false narratives. The incident has also exacerbated diplomatic tensions between Spain and Italy regarding migration policy.
