European Union confronts aging population and pension system pressure
A European Commission report warns that the EU's population will reach a peak of 453.3 million in 2029 and then begin a long‑term decline. The share of seniors will rise while the working‑age cohort shrinks, leading to labour shortages and heightened strain on pension and health‑care financing.
The report notes that single‑person households have already exceeded 75 million in 2024. It calls for reforms of pension and health systems—originally designed for a younger, larger workforce—and recommends a multigenerational solidarity approach. At the same time, the growing “silver economy” is seen as an opportunity for new markets in products, services and innovation for older citizens.
