EU labels Russia as Europe's top security threat

A new security analysis by the European External Action Service classifies Russia as the "most immediate, significant, direct and long‑term security threat" to the European continent. The report cites Russia's militarisation of society, a shift toward a war‑economy and ambitions in strategic sectors such as space and nuclear technology as long‑term dangers to European security. EU foreign ministers are set to adopt the document at their meeting in Brussels and publish it thereafter.

The analysis also names the United States as the EU’s "most important strategic partner," while noting that a secret, non‑public part of the report delivers a markedly more critical assessment of the United States. The assessment reflects growing anti‑Russian rhetoric within European capitals and aligns with broader NATO discussions on defence spending and military aid to Ukraine.
