Diesel prices hit record highs across Europe and the UK

Diesel prices have reached historic highs across Europe and the United Kingdom, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, and supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. In the European Union, the average weekly diesel price hit a record 2.24 euros per liter, with several member states, including Belgium, Italy, Romania, and Poland, reporting record-breaking costs. In Denmark, the Netherlands, and Finland, prices exceeded 2.50 euros per liter.

In the United Kingdom, diesel prices surpassed the 2-pound per liter threshold for the first time, with the RAC reporting an average pump price of 199.35p per liter. This surge has led to concerns regarding fuel rationing and potential speed restrictions under the National Emergency Plan for Fuel to protect critical sectors like the NHS and food production.

In Germany, September 2026 was recorded as the most expensive month for fuel, with diesel averaging 2.386 euros per liter. To mitigate the impact, the German government has implemented a fuel price brake, reducing the energy tax by approximately 17 cents per liter through the end of the year. However, discussions continue regarding the adoption of B10 biodiesel as a faster alternative, a move currently facing resistance from major manufacturers like Volkswagen.
