EU Digital Identity Wallet rollout shows uneven progress across member states

The European Union is working toward the implementation of the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, a tool designed to facilitate access to public and cross-border services while reducing fraud. While the project aims for availability across all member states by the end of the year, implementation remains uneven. Italy, France, and Finland are currently leading the rollout, while countries like Sweden and Germany anticipate later releases or limited initial functionality.

In Romania, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is preparing for the launch of the RO Wallet, expected to be available starting in 2027. The Romanian solution is intended to allow citizens to store digital identities and other essential documents for use both domestically and within other EU member states. The rollout in Romania is planned to be gradual between 2027 and 2028, based on user needs. Authorities have launched an anonymous questionnaire to gather public input on which documents and services citizens would prefer to include in the voluntary digital wallet.
