EU doubles military funding for Djibouti to 20 million euros
The European Union has approved an increase in military funding for Djibouti, doubling the previous allocation from 10 million to 20 million euros. The funds, provided through the European Peace Facility, are intended to bolster the Djiboutian navy’s operational readiness, maritime situational awareness, and presence at sea.
Specific uses for the aid include the maintenance and readiness of patrol vessels, naval training, specialized workshops, and the establishment of a coastal surveillance station equipped with reconnaissance and communication technology. The EU also noted that the funding will support rapid deployment vehicles and floating pontoons, emphasizing that the equipment is not intended for the use of lethal force.
The European Council cited the security situation in the Red Sea and the necessity of protecting freedom of navigation in the strategic region as primary justifications for the increase.
The decision has faced criticism from European Parliament member Petra Steger, who argued that the EU should prioritize domestic economic pressures, energy costs, and infrastructure investments over military projects outside of Europe. She noted that while the fund was established as a peace instrument, it is increasingly being used to finance military structures and equipment for partner states.
