EU electricity planning to boost capacity and aim for 46% demand by 2040
Spain's Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, announced a 2030 electricity planning proposal that raises projected network capacities: transport‑grid positions for distribution requests rise 52%, large‑demand positions 12%, railway and port electrification 75%, sub‑stations 17%, new line kilometres 11% and existing network upgrades 6%. He also noted a forthcoming royal decree requiring distributors to submit addenda to their 2027 investment plans for regional review.
The European Commission unveiled its Electrification Plan, setting a target for electricity to meet 46% of the EU's final energy demand by 2040 – up from the current 23% – and projecting annual savings of about €240 billion in fossil‑fuel imports. The plan calls for lower network tariffs for certain consumers, tax incentives for energy‑intensive industries and measures to close the cost gap between electricity and gas.
