EU electric‑vehicle sales rise 4% in first five months of 2024

In the European Union, registrations of new cars increased by 4 percent in the first five months of 2024, reaching 4.748 million units, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). Battery‑electric vehicles (BEV) accounted for 20 percent of all new car registrations, up from 15.3 percent a year earlier. Growth was strongest in Italy (+75.7 percent), France (+55.4 percent) and Germany (+40.9 percent), while Belgium saw a modest 2.8 percent rise.

Hybrid‑electric (HEV) models also gained market share, climbing to 37.8 percent from 35.1 percent. By contrast, gasoline cars fell to 22.4 percent and diesel to 7.6 percent of registrations. Major manufacturers reported varying performance: Volkswagen Group sales grew 1.5 percent to 1.267 million units, while Tesla’s EU sales jumped 77.3 percent to 89,180 units. Asian manufacturers BYD, Hyundai, Toyota and Ford showed mixed results, with BYD’s sales surging 158.9 percent.

These figures underscore a continuing shift toward electrified vehicles across the EU market.
