EU endorses Italy's mandate for FM and DAB+ radios in all new vehicles

The European Commission has approved an Italian legislative proposal that would require every new passenger and goods vehicle to be equipped with receivers for both analog FM and digital DAB+ radio signals. The draft law also bars software updates that could deactivate these receivers, aiming to preserve terrestrial radio access, support emergency communications and limit reliance on mobile‑network and proprietary infotainment platforms.

More than 70% of drivers in Italy listen to radio while on the road, and the industry argues that DAB+ can deliver location‑based safety alerts. The measure still awaits final approval by the Italian parliament. Confindustria Radio Televisioni welcomed the EU decision, calling it a crucial step to guarantee free and immediate information access for citizens.
