EU Entry-Exit System rollout sees Gibraltar fence removed and Czech border speeded up

On 14 July 2026 the last physical fence on the Gibraltar‑Spain land frontier was dismantled after a Brussels‑signed treaty ended four years of post‑Brexit negotiations. The EU’s biometric Entry‑Exit System (EES) will not be applied at the crossing; instead Spain will carry out Schengen checks at Gibraltar’s airport and port while Gibraltar runs parallel controls. The change eliminates the long‑standing bottleneck for the roughly 14‑15 000 daily commuters between the British Overseas Territory and the surrounding Andalusian region.

In the Czech Republic, police have deployed secunet’s biometric border‑control technology to meet the EES requirements that began in April 2026. Using easygate kiosks and easytower facial‑recognition cameras, the system now processes travellers in an average of 24 seconds per person. Deputy director Petr Malovec praised the smooth rollout, noting that the technology supports both efficiency and European digital sovereignty. Secunet’s solutions are also used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the same system.
