EU Entry/Exit System records 160 million crossings and 50,000 denials
The European Union has released the first official results from its new Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital border control mechanism implemented across 1,500 crossings in 29 Schengen countries. After nearly 300 days of operation, the system has recorded approximately 160 million border crossings and denied entry to over 50,000 individuals who did not meet requirements.
European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner described the EES as the “most modern border protection system in the world.” The system utilizes biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans, to replace traditional passport stamps. This technology has successfully identified nearly 1,500 security risks, including suspects for terrorism and human trafficking. Notable successes include the arrest of a Moldovan national in Romania using a false identity and 108 hits on wanted persons by Belgian authorities.
However, the rollout has faced criticism due to technical glitches and significant travel delays. Travelers have reported inconsistent data regarding their remaining stay allowances and long queues at major airports. While officials have occasionally allowed flexibility to waive certain requirements during peak periods to manage crowds, the system continues to face challenges regarding coordination between member states and technical reliability.
