EU expresses concern over UK prisoner release and deportation plans

Several European Union member states have expressed concern regarding the United Kingdom’s plans for early prisoner release and the expedited deportation of foreign convicts. EU diplomats reported that there is significant risk in returning criminals to their home countries without providing sufficient prior information to local authorities.

To alleviate pressure on an overcrowded prison system, the UK intends to release more than 2,500 prisoners by the end of the year. The Ministry of Justice estimates that an initial wave of 700 prisoners will be released on October 1, followed by subsequent phases.

Further tension arises from a proposed policy change set for January 2027, which would allow certain foreign convicts to be deported without serving a minimum portion of their sentence in the UK. While the British government stated that individuals convicted of serious crimes, such as terrorism, are excluded from these mechanisms, diplomats warned that without adequate data sharing, deported individuals could move freely in their home countries immediately upon release.
