EU Faces AI Dependency Threat as US and China Lead, Warns European Parliament Member

European Parliament Vice‑Chair Sergey Lagodinsky warned that the European Union risks becoming a "digital colony" caught between American and Chinese artificial‑intelligence empires. He cited the US decision to restrict access to Anthropic’s powerful Mythos model for non‑US nationals as an "AI kill switch" that could cut off up to 88 % of the world’s population from leading AI systems.

Lagodinsky argued that Europe lags far behind in AI capability and that massive, trillion‑euro scale investments from private firms, along with faster completion of the EU capital‑markets union and the single digital market, are essential. He called for Franco‑German gigafactories, European space constellations, and a multilateral digital strategy to counter what he describes as digital imperialism.

The commentary emphasizes that without swift action, the EU could lose strategic control over its digital future, while the United States and China continue to dominate the AI frontier.
