EU fast‑charging rule spurs 400 kW stations on Danish motorways

The European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) mandates a fast‑charging point of at least 400 kW every 60 km on the TEN‑T Core road network, with the requirement taking effect at the end of 2025 and the power level rising to 600 kW per station by 2028. Denmark is already meeting the target, having opened 22 new 400 kW charging parks on motorways in January 2026 and planning roughly 450 public fast‑charging points along highways and major roads by the end of 2026. The Danish Road Directorate aims for 99.9 % of long trips to be possible without detours and for waiting times at peak stations to stay under two minutes.

A practical test of the new infrastructure was carried out with a Mercedes‑Benz GLB 250+ equipped with 800 V technology. The vehicle covered about 1 000 km using the 400 kW chargers available on Danish motorways, demonstrating that high‑voltage systems can deliver diesel‑like convenience for everyday drivers and help alleviate range‑anxiety for electric‑car owners.
