EU Flight Cancellation Compensation and Vacation Refund Rules Explained for Travelers

EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 gives passengers the right to a refund or re‑routing when a flight departing from an EU airport or operated by an EU carrier is cancelled less than 14 days before departure. Passengers must also receive assistance – meals, communication facilities, and accommodation when necessary – and may claim compensation of €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500‑3,500 km, and €600 for distances over 3,500 km, unless the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather, security threats, political instability or air‑traffic‑control strikes.

Vacation‑storno (cancellation) insurance covers travelers who must abandon a booked trip due to illness, injury, family emergencies, vehicle breakdowns or other unforeseen events. The policy can reimburse non‑refundable flight, accommodation and excursion costs, as well as medical expenses, repatriation and direct billing to clinics. Consumers are advised to keep all documentation, compare flexible versus non‑refundable rates, and note that tour operators are legally required to refund if they cancel the package.
