EU food and chemical regulations create challenges for producers

New European Union regulations regarding food safety and chemical substances are creating significant operational challenges for manufacturers and retailers. At a recent industry event in Vienna, experts discussed the complexities of allergen labeling, noting that the lack of a unified EU solution for unintentional allergen traces leads to legal uncertainty. Because analytical assessments of trace amounts can fluctuate, a product labeled correctly in one member state might trigger a recall in another.

Additionally, new restrictions under the REACH chemical regulation are impacting various consumer goods. These regulations govern the production and market placement of chemical substances to mitigate risks to human health and the environment. For instance, new limitations on certain persistent chemicals are being implemented, requiring companies to adjust recipes, materials, and production processes to remain compliant with evolving EU standards.
