Kaja Kallas accuses Sergey Lavrov of spreading lies at G20

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of promoting lies and misleading narratives regarding the conflict in Ukraine during G20 meetings in Atlanta, Georgia. Kallas stated that while officials directly confronted Lavrov, his claims were refuted by European delegations.

Kallas further asserted that Russia is not showing a genuine readiness to negotiate peace, noting that the months of July, August, and September saw the highest number of civilian casualties in Ukraine. She called for continued pressure on Moscow, specifically regarding a ceasefire in the Black Sea.

The diplomatic tension led to the cancellation of the traditional G20 group photo. Approximately one-third of participants, including representatives from Australia and Canada, refused to appear in a photo with Lavrov. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cancelled the session to avoid a diplomatic confrontation that could have distracted from the meeting's objectives.
