EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas Talks with Iran on Gulf Tensions and Ukraine War

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she spoke by phone with Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi about recent developments in the Gulf and the war in Ukraine. She noted that a temporary pause in clashes in the Gulf could give mediators time to find a diplomatic path and avoid a full‑scale war. Kallas welcomed the fact that Ukrainian foreign minister Andriy Sibihа also held a call with Araghchi to reduce tensions.

Kallas reiterated the EU’s condemnation of Ukraine’s attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, which caused an explosion, one fatality and another injury. She called the strike illegal, a violation of the UN Charter, and said Iran had summoned the Ukrainian envoy to Tehran in protest.
