EU greenhouse vegetable imports rise as Morocco and Turkey dominate

European Union imports of major greenhouse vegetables—including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines, and courgettes—have increased by 60.1% between the 2015–2017 period and 2023–2025. Morocco and Turkey have emerged as the dominant suppliers, accounting for between 65% and 91% of total imports depending on the specific product.

Turkey saw significant growth in exports to the EU, with a 136% increase, while Morocco's exports grew by 55.9%. Other notable increases in import volumes came from Tunisia (+193.6%) and Egypt (+309.2%). Conversely, imports from Serbia, North Macedonia, and Israel declined.

In terms of per capita availability, the supply of these greenhouse vegetables in the EU has outpaced population growth. While tomato availability per inhabitant remained stable due to stagnating harvests, the available quantity per capita for peppers, aubergines, courgettes, and cucumbers all saw increases. This trend reflects an accelerated shift toward greenhouse cultivation, characterized by rising yields per hectare despite a decrease in total cultivation area.
