EU heat pump surge saves €9.7 billion in LNG import costs

A European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) report covering 21 EU countries shows that heat‑pump sales rose 13% last year to 2.9 million units, bringing the continent’s total stock to 29.3 million units. The 2.9 million new installations projected for 2025 are expected to replace 2.5 billion m³ of LNG, covering about 24% of the EU’s gas imports from the Middle East and delivering roughly €9.7 billion in annual import‑cost savings – about 7% of the bloc’s total LNG intake.

Germany and France lead the market; Germany’s heat‑pump share in the national heating sector reached 50% for the first time, while France sold 528 k units, followed by Italy with 423 k. Per‑household intensity is highest in Norway (650 units per 1 000 homes) and Finland (540). EHPA director Paul Kenny said each new heat pump “strengthens Europe’s energy security” and highlighted the volatility and high price of LNG. The report notes the EU Commission’s upcoming electrification package, which is expected to lower taxes and VAT on heat‑pump installations to further boost adoption.
