EU High Representative Kaja Kallas calls for accountability in Syria

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has expressed the European Union’s support for investigating and holding accountable those responsible for attacks, persecutions, and threats against Christian and other communities in Syria.

In response to inquiries from PASOK MEP Nikolas Farantouris, Kallas addressed reports of religious violence in the Christian city of Suqaylabiyah, which included the harassment of women and the vandalism of places of worship. The inquiries follow previous reports of persecution by paramilitary groups under the transitional leadership of Al-Saara (Al-Jolani), as well as a terrorist attack on the Prophet Elias Holy Temple in Damascus in June 2025 that killed 25 Orthodox Christians.

Kallas emphasized that Syria’s transition can only succeed if it is inclusive and protects the rights of all Syrians regardless of ethnic or religious background. She noted that the responsibility lies with the transitional authorities to ensure the safety and fundamental rights of all citizens.
