US pressures EU to release emergency fuel reserves amid rising prices

The United States is exerting significant pressure on European allies to release emergency diesel and oil reserves to combat rising global fuel prices. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on European partners to fulfill existing commitments and provide additional supplies to stabilize the market.

In response to the crisis, the European Commission and EU member states are holding emergency meetings in Brussels to coordinate a response. Discussions include the potential involvement of the International Energy Agency (IEA). While some European officials are open to negotiations, others express concern that releasing reserves could leave the region vulnerable during the winter months, especially given geopolitical tensions in the Gulf.

Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump has indicated support for a potential ban on US oil and diesel exports to lower domestic fuel prices. European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič warned that such a ban would have “dramatic economic consequences” for the European economy. Analysts suggest that while some attribute price hikes to attacks on Russian refineries, the primary driver remains the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
