EU Implements New Migration and Border Management System

An EU-wide agreement on migration and asylum policy entered into force, introducing stricter border controls, faster asylum case processing and a new “solidarity mechanism” that requires member states with fewer applications to accept relocations or provide financial and operational support. The pact is backed by a €6.34 billion budget for migration, border management and internal security and includes safeguards for vulnerable groups, though critics warn it may limit access to asylum and rely heavily on deterrence.

On the same day, the European Union activated a single search portal and a Common Identity Repository that connect existing databases—Entry Exit System, Visa Information System, Eurodac, Schengen Information System, ETIAS and ECRIS TCN—allowing authorised authorities to query migration, visa, asylum and security records through one interface. The tools aim to reduce errors, speed up checks and improve identity verification without creating new data categories.
