EU implements new steel import rules and food quality regulations

New regulatory changes are impacting the steel and food sectors in Europe. Under new European Union rules effective October 1, 2026, steel importers must document the “country of melt and pour” to increase supply chain transparency. This follows regulations aimed at countering global production capacity surpluses. Importers face a 50% tariff rate once quotas are exhausted.

In Poland, updated legislation regarding the commercial quality of agri-food products took effect on September 16, 2026. The law introduces a stricter definition of food fraud and expands oversight to include online sales and advertising. The measures are intended to protect consumers from misleading labels and shield honest producers from unfair competition by strengthening controls from production through to retail.
